Introduction
The pointed amphora by the Achilles Painter held at the BnF, the latest and the largest Attic red-figured pointed amphora known to date, and one of only two to have kept their original stand, is the only recorded specimen of this shape by the artist, who was active in Athens from ca. 460 to ca. 425 BC. Its decoration, which depicts a spirited procession of eight maenads and two satyrs led by Dionysus, makes it one of the Achilles Painter’s undisputed masterpieces (fig. 1 a-b).
