War is usually seen as a man’s business, with women playing only secondary roles. Although they are both actors and witnesses to history, their experience is constantly devalued. Yet the scale of the conflicts of the 19th and 20th centuries affected the population at large. As women were mobilised in a variety of ways, it seems important to promote a reading of the war phenomenon from a gender perspective. This volume is part of that effort. Bringing together contributions from historians and literary scholars, it describes both the complexity of women’s experiences of war and their representations in literature.
