Abstracts

In a few words, Alain Corbin provides an overview of the various papers and explains their common theme: exile. He reminds us that in the 19th century, because of the numerous changes in political regimes and because of the "civilised" character of repression which only very rarely resorted to executing political opponents, there were a great many political exiles. What was had been a rare occurrence became a complex reality. The space and the territory of exile could be close or remote. Exile could also be interior or imaginary; and it changed the way people perceived time. How did the exiles experience this "change of scenery"? What were the inherent advantages and sufferings of exile? What were the various ways of returning? All these questions, and many others, make this topic an extremely rich one.
