Les peintures murales de la chapelle Sainte-Libérate de l’église de Mazères à Castelnau-Rivière-Basse (Hautes-Pyrénées)
Abstracts
The Romanesque church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Mazères houses a chapel dedicated to Saint Libérate, a popular martyr saint whose remains were preserved in a marble shrine dating from 1342. Built in the 12th century, the chapel was raised in the 14th century to accommodate a large painted decoration. This decoration is currently obscured by a late whitewash and cannot be uncovered for the time being due to the general state of the church. The historiated scenes are mainly to be found on the east wall of the chapel, which would have predated its construction. A blazoned band, a series of quatrefoils and a main scene with nimbed figures framing a Gothic geminated bay are also visible. The other walls are decorated throughout with geometric motifs and vine tendrils.
