One of the two 2020 issues of the History, Medicine and Health journal will be devoted to a thematic collection on the role of the animal body in medical knowledge and practices.

This collection will focus on the epistemic stakes, whether they are social, ethical, political, economic or even religious ones, in so far as they are related to the use of animals in different fields of human medicine (anatomy, physiology, therapeutics), and to the development of veterinarian medicine as a specific field of knowledge even in terms of institutional foundation and professionalization, and to the evolutions of such medicine.

From animal experimentation to the management of epizooties, from animals as disease vectors to human-animal hybridization (prostheses, teeth…), from racialist human-animal comparisons to animals designed as medicines, this collection, which is entitled “The animal body” for the time being, will welcome paper proposals spanning all historical periods and all cultural and geographical areas.

For this issue of the journal, contributions focusing on this topic can also be proposed for the “Sources and documents” section which is devoted to the critical presentation of textual and / or iconographic sources.

Whether they are papers for the thematic collection or sources that are presented and commented upon for the “Sources and documents” section, proposals will have to be relevant to the intellectual orientations of the journal in that it gives pride of place to social and cultural history approaches and remains open to interdisciplinary dialogues.

History, Medicine and Health publishes papers written in French, English or Spanish. The contribution proposals for the “Sources and documents” section can be submitted in any of these three languages, but the printed publication of these texts will be in their French translation exclusively: however, the digital version can be bilingual.

Submissions cannot exceed 45,000 characters, (spaces included), for papers, vs. 10,000 for the presentations of the sources texts.
