Permanent CFP (varia)

The journal of archaeology, history and art history Frontière·s welcomes contributions in the varia section of each issue, in the form of articles published independently of the thematic dossiers. These are contributions based on original research on issues related to the notion of frontier and its reception in protohistoric, ancient and medieval societies.

The polysemy of the French word ‘frontière’ (border, frontier, boundary, limit) allows for a variety of approaches and a wide range of sources (archaeological remains, textual sources, epigraphy, iconography, and so on). It also allows the study of the material and immaterial dimensions (spatial, cultural, economic, symbolic, legal, etc.) of the border. As examples, we refer you to the themes of previous issues (closed CFPs) and to articles already published (full-text issues), which explore a variety of meanings attached to the notion of border.

Within the varia, the following themes may be explored in particular

  • the border as an instrument of separation, distinction or contrast (socio-territorial, political, cultural, etc.);

  • the border as an interface or a porous border;

  • phenomena involving the movement of individuals or the crossing of borders, such as nomadism and migration;

  • transgressive practices linked to the fundamental limits of societies, in religious, moral or legal terms: we can thus question the paradigms and norms dictated by laws considered universal or by custom;

  • the ways in which borders are consolidated in order to turn them into barrier borders (through specific constructions, laws, etc.). Such an approach can be accompanied by a reflection on walls (fortifications, borders, taboos, etc.) and their imaginaries;

  • the limits of knowledge, the spaces to be mapped or explored;

  • the representations and imaginaries associated with borders.

In order to be included in the current year's issue, contributions to the permanent call for papers must be submitted by the 31st of May.

For example, if an article is submitted by 15 June 2024, the journal cannot guarantee that it will be published before the end of 2025.

After evaluation according to the criteria for current issues (see editorial process), these articles will be published in the varia section. The maximum length of an article is 25,000 characters, excluding spaces. Contributions should be formatted according to the journal's editorial and bibliographic standards and sent to frontiere-s@msh-lse.fr.
