ESMA receives the support of CNRS’s Institute for Humanities and Social Science (InSHS) in 2023-2024. The journal encourages empirically grounded social science research on contemporary Egypt, Sudan, and other Arab countries. Created in 1990 as Égypte monde arabe, ESMA has recently become a trilingual publication (English, Arabic, and French). The journal’s new name, Égypte Soudan mondes arabes, emphasizes the connected histories that bind together the region’s societies through multiple networks and circulations. It also stresses the plurality of the region, which contains many non-Arab peoples and cultures.

ESMA supports field research and publishes the work of junior and senior scholars. We invite papers from multiple fields (sociology, anthropology, political science, geography, urban studies, history, political economy, legal studies, development studies, etc.) that contribute to a better understanding of social change and bring in new theoretical vistas.

Submit an article or a special issue

Several types of contributions may be submitted to ESMA:

• Varias (maximum 8,000 words) are research article featuring an original, theoretically informed argument on contemporary Egypt, Sudan or the Arab World.

• Research Notes (3,000-5,000 words) are short pieces on a methodological, theoretical, empirical or ethical aspect of the research in social science in the region.

• Sources and Materials (maximum 4,000 words) are short reflections on what constitutes an archive, and may feature iconographic or textual documents, including interviews or chronologies.

To submit a Varia, a Research Note, or a note on Source and Materials, email esma.journal[at]protonmail[dot]com with a complete text or an abstract, and write the type of article you wish to propose in the email title.

To submit a Special Issue, i.e. a group of articles on a common theme, email esma.journal[at]protonmail[dot]com with a description and a bibliography (1,500 words), along with either 5 to 8 abstracts of existing articles (400 words each) or a call for papers.

Articles go through a double blind evaluation process, and are seen by at least two reviewers. The editorial board accepts or rejects the proposed articles.
