From the breeding of animals and the cultivation of plants, societies have also extracted materials (yarns, fibres, leathers, dyes, etc.) for the manufacture of clothing and accessories (lace, buttons, hooks, laces, etc.). A whole production chain is organised into various specialised trades, generating techniques, tools, industry and commerce. The articles cover the stages in the production of clothing, whether made from plant or animal materials, natural or coloured, simple or sophisticated: the manufacture of raw materials (spinning, weaving, tanning, extraction, etc.), their transformation (softening, dyeing, cutting, etc.), their assembly and finishing (sewing, embroidery, etc.). Particular attention is paid to tools and installations; the organisation of work (individual/collective, domestic/workshop, separation or grouping of various tasks); and the scale and volume of production (domestic use/broadcasting circuit). Finally, these questions lead us to highlight the geographical, historical and social particularities of the manufacture of clothing and its accessories, or to reflect on them.
