Translating Lucian is never as easy as it might seem. His pure and clear Greek – sometimes taken for an “easy” Greek – hides in fact insidious traps for the translator. Indeed, while his syntax is generally plain, a great difficulty is represented by two different – though strictly bound – elements. The first one is the exact rendition of the peculiar tone of his prose. It is no secret that one of the problems par excellence with Lucian consists in stating what he really thought of the topics and the characters he discussed – that is, understanding each time whether his verdicts are to be taken seriously or not. The second difficulty lies instead in his rich and varied vocabulary. When a Sophist Speaks of Sophists: Untranslatables and Holy Men in Lucian (Peregr. 13)
Résumés
Cet article a pour objectif d’examiner et de résoudre les problèmes de traduction liés à la définition de Jésus comme σοφιστής dans Luc. Pereg. 13. Cette définition a donné lieu à un véritable intraduisible, du fait de la grande polysémie de ce nom et du contexte énonciatif incertain qui empêche toute interprétation définitive. ΙIl s’agira donc de mener une enquête à la fois linguistique et interprétative. L’analyse linguistique de σοφιστής portera sur trois points : d’abord, son développement historique, ensuite, son contexte d’emploi, enfin, sa transposition dans les langues modernes. Cette démarche en trois temps permettra d’étudier les différentes propositions interprétatives du passage de Lucien : il sera alors possible d’en identifier une nouvelle, à partir du lien existant entre Jésus et Pérégrinos, tous deux qualifiés de σοφισταί. Pour finir, l’étude des traductions les plus récentes dans les différentes langues aura pour finalité de renouveler la manière dont ce passage peut être traduit, à la lumière d’une conception dynamique de l’intraduisibilité.
